GirlBoss founder announces company has been acquired

On December 17th, Sophia Amoruso, the founder of Girlboss Media, announced that she had sold the company to startup Attention Capital.

Girlboss Media is a digital platform complete with blog, podcast, events, and a social network that was dubbed as being “LinkedIn for Women”. It was founded in 2017.

Amoruso announced the acquisition through her personal and business Instagram accounts, saying, “For many entrepreneurs, it’s the kind of event that we all hope might come one day—and one that I’ve worked 13 years to finally pull off. Today, Girlboss joined forces with the big brains at Attention Capital to supercharge our future, together.?”

Amoruso will join Attention Capital as a founding partner and will remain CEO of the brand. She has called Attention Capital “a holding startup that wants to fix media”.

What is Attention Capital?

Attention Capital was founded by Joe Marchese. Marchese has experience working at a variety of media companies, including 21st Century Fox, FX, and National Geographic. Other managers include former Snap VP Nick Bell and Ashlyn Gentry, a former Senior Vice President at software company, Palantir.

Gentry has described Attention Capital as “a holding company” and “not a venture capital firm”.

“Our thesis is that media businesses with the most potential are the ones with loyal followers who are willing to let the brand curate some aspect of their lives, from what they read to what they buy,” says Gentry. “And that’s something that Sophia Amoruso has created with Girlboss.”

Who is Sophia Amoruso?

Sophia Amoruso is the founder of Nasty Gal, the multi-million dollar vintage clothing e-commerce store. She is also author of the New York Times Best Seller, #Girlboss.
