Prince Harry and Meghan Markle signed a major Netflix deal this week for their new unnamed production company to produce feature films, scripted shows, documentaries and children’s programming. The UK£112 million (US$143.5 million) deal with Netflix “could include a documentary on Princess Diana,” although sources from the Royal family have revealed that the documentary could “fuel tension between him and William.”
A royal drama
While the Duke and Duchess of Sussex revealed their grand plans with their new venture, a former bodyguard, Ken Wharfe, of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, is demanding Harry to get a controversial musical pulled from the streaming service. Wharfe explained, “If the critics are to be believed, this musical story is not a joyous journey of love with a happy ending, but an episodic account of untruths, scandal and sex.”
Several scenes showcase the royal family in a negative light, including one where the Queen labels Princess Diana “a tart.” Other scandalous scenes include Princess Diana self-harming after an argument with Prince Charles and the Queen saying “In the old days we would have chopped off your head.”
A scheduled Broadway run was ultimately put on halt due to the coronavirus pandemic. Netflix plans to premiere “Diana: A New Musical” on their streaming service early next year.
The couple, who left the British royal family this year and moved to California, already have multiple projects in development. However, Meghan has stated that she has no interest in reigniting her acting career.
In a statement released by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, they explained: “Through our work with diverse communities and their environments, to shining a light on people and causes around the world, our focus will be on creating content that informs but also gives hope. As new parents, making inspirational family programming is also important to us, as is powerful storytelling through a truthful and relatable lens.”
The first few projects include a nature documentary series and an animated series, which will focus on inspiring women. The pair aim to “share impactful content that unlocks action.”
Netflix, the world’s largest streaming platform with more than 190 million subscribers, has shown their gratitude toward the couple and has huge hopes for their future collaboration. Current chief content officer at Netflix, Ted Sarandos is optimistic about the joint venture.
“Harry and Meghan have inspired millions of people all around the world with their authenticity, optimism and leadership,” said Sarandos. “We’re incredibly proud they have chosen Netflix as their creative home – and are excited about telling stories with them that can help build resilience and increase understanding for audiences everywhere.”
