Actor Sacha Baron Cohen has a brand-new project coming out soon. If reports are to be believed, the project is expected to be “very nice.” A fan spotted the actor and comedian last month filming in Los Angeles in his famous Borat costume – the same from the popular 2006 film. According to Collider, Cohen has not only completed shooting the film, but has already begun screening the anticipated sequel to a “select few industry types.”
Sacha Baron Cohen first created the Borat character for his comedy series “Da Ali G Show.” Following the success of the show, Cohen made a mockumentary in 2006 titled “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. The film follows Cohen as Borat, a journalist from Kazakhstan, as he travels across the United States to learn the truth about American culture.
Borat has wild interactions with unsuspecting Americans who truly believe Cohen to be a naive foreigner trying to learn about the United States. The film had both critical and commercial success, but it also received backlash due to its offensive humor. Kazakhstan also made headlines by banning the film. Despite the backlash, “Borat” received Golden Globe and Oscar nominations for Best Original Screenplay and garnered a cult status. If Cohen has successfully managed to make a solid follow-up, “Borat 2” has huge potential to succeed like its predecessor.
What to expect from “Borat 2”
Collider reported that the sequel will follow Borat in the present day, where he thinks he is a massive Hollywood star due to the success of the first film. Instead of enjoying the luxuries of his newfound fame, Borat will be trying to go undercover and hide from the public, disguised while interviewing other people about their opinion on the Borat character. The film has been described as “Cohen playing Borat playing Cohen,” according to a source for Collider.
The Film Stage reported that the sequel’s title will be shorter than the first film – potentially being titled “Great Success.” Although there are no other reports on who else is cast for the film, some speculate there will be a digital release on a streaming platform like Netflix, especially due to its explicit content. 20th Century Fox, now owned by Disney, produced the original film, so it’s unlikely to see Disney push an R-rated comedy during the pandemic.
Earlier this year, Cohen infiltrated far-right allies and got the cops called on him by Rudy Giuliani. These scenes may make their way into the sequel, and fans are hoping that director Larry Charles and producer Jay Roach will also return for the sequel. Apart from a possible cameo from Rudy Giuliani, the film is also expected to touch on the current pandemic as well Donald Trump and Jeffery Epstein’s relationship. Mike Pence may make a cameo as well.
Because the film will have a strong political narrative, fans can hope for the sequel to drop during election season, although this has not been confirmed yet. Sacha Baron Cohen is also starring in the upcoming Netflix courtroom drama film “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” in which he plays social activist Abbie Hoffman.
