Despite not being officially announced by Netflix, Season 3 of the hit Netflix show “The Umbrella Academy” is expected to resume production starting this month. The rumors come after a report from The Director’s Guild of Canada, which showed the cast and crew scheduled to begin production in Toronto this month. Although the exact date wasn’t listed, the schedule coincided with the one published by Production Weekly as well.

Season 1 of “The Umbrella Academy” became Netflix’s breakout hit of 2019. It was the third most popular series on the streaming service last year, behind shows like “Stranger Things” and “The Witcher.” The show managed to draw in a reported 45 million viewers for their first season in the first month, with the second season cementing the show’s success and becoming one of the most popular comic book adaptation shows ever. The popular series premiered its second season back in July 2020 to critical acclaim and topped multiple Nielsen ratings lists. Fans who have watched Season 2 anticipate Season 3 to pick up after Season 2’s cliffhanger, which left fans in shock.

Cast members are apparently still as clueless as fans are regarding the new season. In an interview with “Movies That Changed My Life” on IMDb, Emmy Raver-Lampman (Allison Hargreeves/Number 3) said that she wished she knew more about the next season saying,

“We’re honestly waiting with bated breath as well, as [the fans].” Fan favorite Justin H. Min (Ben Hargreeves/Number 6) is determined for a third season of “The Umbrella Academy,” especially since he is ready to take on a bigger role after the events of Season 2. Min has said that he will be playing a different version of his character in the upcoming season, once it has been officially renewed by Netflix. The actor told TV Line, “He would be quite different, in terms of not only his appearance but even in terms of personality and character.”

Even the creator of the original comic book series, Gerard Way, is optimistic for another season since viewers have just started to learn the “true nature” of the characters.

Considering that there was only a seventeen month gap between Seasons 1 and 2, which is quite fast for a show that is very expensive to produce due to the extensive visual effects required, fans won’t have to wait too long once filming resumes for Season 3. COVID-19 has affected the show’s scheduling – but with other shows and movies resuming production, fans of “The Umbrella Academy” can expect to see a new season by the end of next year, if reports on the show’s production are true.
