UK PM Boris Johnson leaves hospital as country’s death toll passes 10,000

United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson was discharged from the hospital on Sunday after several days spent in intensive care battling COVID-19.

Johnson was first admitted to London’s St Thomas’ Hospital on April 5 and then transferred to intensive care the following day where he remained until April 9.

In a message posted from his official residence at 10 Downing Street in London, Johnson said that the “NHS saved my life, no question.”

“I want to thank everyone in the entire UK for the effort and the sacrifice you have made and are making. When the sun is out and the kids are at home, when the whole natural world seems at its loveliest and the outdoors is so inviting, I can only imagine how tough it has been to follow the rules on social distancing.”

In the same clip, Johnson also thanked hospital staff who stood by his bedside for 48 hours when his prognosis was not certain.  

For now, Johnson is continuing his recovery at the official country residence of the Prime Minister at Chequers, northwest of London.

The Prime Minister will not yet return to work, on the advice of his medical team.

The UK is now the fifth country to surpass 10,000 deaths, joining the US, Spain, Italy and France after 737 new COVID-19 related deaths were reported on April 12. That is a decrease from the previous day, in which 917 deaths were recorded.

In response to the numbers, the UK’s Health Minister, Matt Hancock, acknowledged during a press conference that the milestone was a “somber” one.
