Don’t slack on Mother’s Day just because of social distancing

Mother's Day 2020 coronavirus covid-19

Mother’s Day is quickly approaching but because of COVID-19, this year might be a little trickier to celebrate especially if you and your mom would generally get together.

However, while going to brunch or dinner may be off the table this year, the coronavirus doesn’t have to completely ruin the special day.

With a little bit of planning and outside-of-the-box thinking, you can still make this Mother’s Day special.

Make time

If the pandemic is preventing you from being physically with your mom, you can still carve out some quality time together.

Use a virtual calling tool like Skype or Zoom to set up some time for you and your mom to “hang out.” You can also invite other family members to join in on a virtual dinner or cocktail hour via a conference call or an app like Houseparty.

Whether you opt for pizza and beer together or you want to go the extra mile with a preplanned menu and themed cocktails, it can be done from a distance with just a bit of planning.

If your mom is a bit technically-challenged or a virtual hangout just isn’t your style, just pick up the phone! An old-fashioned telephone call is always a nice gesture to show your mom you’re thinking of her.

Special Delivery

The tradition of sending flowers to a loved one on a special occasion is nothing new. People have been using flower delivery services to do this for years. Now with the internet, it’s never been easier.

Most major floral companies offer a catalog of choices online so it’s easy to pick out the perfect bouquet with just a few clicks. On top of that, amid the pandemic most companies stress that deliveries can and will be completed entirely contact-free.

So give your local florist a call to see if they’ll be offering delivery services on Mother’s Day and whether they can help you design the perfect arrangement.

But a traditional bouquet is only one option for this Mother’s Day. Instead of flowers, consider sending a gift from Edible Arrangements. Delicious strawberries covered in chocolate with fresh pineapple and melon is hard to beat. Alternatively, Harry & David has a wide range of gift options, from care packages and fruit baskets to wine kits and baked goods.

If you want to pick out something special for your mom, have something shipped from Etsy, a treasure trove of handmade, personalized and artisan gifts.

Many sellers also offer gift wrapping and can even include a personal note for that extra special touch.

Dinner with Mom

Cooking for Mom on Mother’s Day or taking her to dinner has been a go-to way to celebrate for generations. But just because of social distancing, doesn’t mean you can’t carry on that tradition,

With restaurants offering delivery in place of their dine-in services, you can arrange to have dinner from your Mom’s favorite restaurant delivered right to her door and with food-delivery services like UberEats, DoorDash, Grubhub and more becoming widespread, there are a ton of great choices.

Or, give your mom a rain check. Buy her a gift card to a nice restaurant and maybe throw in a voucher for some movie tickets. This way you can let her know that although you can’t go out to celebrate this Mother’s Day, you’re planning on making up for it as soon as the restrictions are lifted.

Go beyond gifting

One thing that any mom appreciates is a thoughtful and sentimental gift.

If you’re musically inclined, consider writing her a song and recording it for her. Or, create a work of art just for her.

Take her interests into account and give her a subscription service that will cater to these, like Audible if she’s an avid reader or Winc if she loves trying new wines.

Alternatively, you can write your mom a letter or postcard and drop it in the mail (a long-lost art in this day and age.) Start a book or movie at the same time and plan a hangout to discuss it together. Make some time to create a photo album or scrapbook of great memories that she can cherish for years to come.

A little creativity and thought can lead you to something your mom will love (and won’t break the bank if you’re on a budget.)

When it comes to Mother’s Day, the most important part is showing your mom how much she means to you, and it doesn’t matter whether that is done through an exotic floral arrangement or simply with a handmade keepsake.
