Twitter has become the first major tech company to allow its employees to work from home for as long as they see fit.

The move, which carries forward the new normal, comes amid the coronavirus outbreak that as of May 13, has infected over 4.3 million and claimed the lives of over 290,000 people.

BuzzFeed first reported the decision saying that the company would not reopen most offices before September and after reopening, employees had the freedom to decide whether they would want to work from the office facilities. It was not stated how many employees would be offered this flexibility.

“Opening offices will be our decision. When and if our employees come back, will be theirs.” read the company email,

Jack Dorsey, the chief executive officer of Twitter, had also initially planned to work remotely and lead the San Francisco team from Africa for three to six months this year.

Facebook and Google have both allowed all employees to work from home for the remainder of the year with offices for both companies reopening as early as June and July respectively.
