On Thursday, the United Nations refugee agency reported that the Bangladeshi government had confirmed two COVID-19 infections from the Rohingya camps. One was a refugee and the other was a member of the host population.

According to a community leader at the camps, up to 1,900 people who had contact with the two infected will now have to complete some form of quarantine.

Around one million refugees live at the Rohingya camps, fleeing oppression and persecution from neighboring Myanmar.

With the “draconian” internet laws of Bangladesh, it remains impossible to determine the true virus figures among the host population as well as within the camps. The country is also said to have limited testing capabilities with under 110 refugees tested for COVID-19, according to the UN agency.

As of May 15, Bangladesh has reported 18,863 cases of the coronavirus and 283 deaths.
