On Sunday, Russia reported an additional 153 deaths from COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) bringing the total number of fatalities to 3,541. The additional 153 deaths mark the nation’s highest daily toll.

However, Russia also recorded its lowest number of new infections in three weeks.

As of May 25, the country has a total of 344,481 confirmed cases of COVID-19 – the third-highest number of confirmed cases in the world.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated earlier this month that the actual number of infections in Moscow, the epicenter of the outbreak, was at least three times higher than the official figure. The capital city accounts for half of the nation’s cases and deaths with Russia’s Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and President Vladimir Putin’s spokesperson Dmitry Peskov among those hospitalized with the virus.

On May 11 during a televised address to the nation, Putin instructed residents not to leave their home unless it was to shop, work or walk the dog.

“We have a long and difficult process ahead of us with no room for mistakes,” he said.
