With the leaves changing colors amid chillier temperatures arriving with the sweet aroma of pumpkin spice, it is safe to say that fall is in full force. Although the typical outdoor activities associated with sweater weather may have to be modified, there is still an abundance of fun fall activities for indulging in the cozier side of life.  Whether you’re taking a scenic walk to admire the fall foliage or decorating pumpkins with friends and family at home, we’ve compiled a list of some undeniably fun autumn activities in Hong Kong for enjoying the season.

Baking

As autumn draws in a chilling breeze, retreat to the warmth of the kitchen and bake treats with all the flavors of the season. After all, is there anything better than walking into a home that smells like freshly baked pumpkin bread? The comfort of fall desserts is always a guarantee – from pumpkin and apple pies to tarts, cookies and Halloween-themed treats – there is bound to be a recipe that satisfies your sweet tooth and love for the season. For an activity with friends and family – which can even be on Zoom for those indoors during the pandemic – get your competitive juices flowing by having a friendly autumn-themed bake-off.

Camping

Take advantage of the crisp weather and plan a camping trip. Gather around a campfire with your close friends or family, make some s’mores and tell your scariest ghost stories – bonus points if the stories are true. Whether screams of joy or fear, a good time is guaranteed to be had with an outdoor adventure. For those seeking an indoor alternative, make it a small and intimate gathering at home and build a cozy fort using pillows and blankets. Don’t have access to a fire? Get creative by using your kitchen stove – or even a candle – to roast marshmallows.

While visiting a farm packed with pony rides and hay bales for some old fashioned fun may be out of the question during the pandemic, there is a safer alternative that’s still good fun. The Petting Zoom is a virtual petting zoo run by the Caton family on a small farm in Virginia. This online service allows users to meet several different animals – from llamas, kangaroos, camels, sheep and more – on Zoom for an interactive farm tour or even an educational animal show. The Petting Zoom is surely an unforgettable experience for all ages.

Feeling crafty? Pick up a pumpkin from your local grocery store or vegetable market and get into the fall spirit by making pumpkin art. Not limited to carving Jack-O’-lanterns, use arts and crafts supplies such as paints, glitter or felt to get extra-creative with your fall pumpkin displays. Spend the day indoors with friends and family unleashing your inner artists and competing on who can make the best pumpkin art.

Autumn’s cool weather makes it ideal to head outdoors – safely, with a mask and maintaining social distance from others. Hong Kong offers several scenic places during this season – from sunrise spots to hiking trails – however, the spirit of fall is mainly associated with the fiery crimson autumn leaves. Sweet Gum Woods in Tai Tong is the city’s signature spot for autumn leaf-peeping – Hong Kong’s response to Japan’s Karuizawa. With the densely packed sweet gum trees grown in this area, visitors will get to see the vibrant mix of warm colored leaves. Besides Sweet Gum Woods, you can also head to Tai Tong Nature Trail, which is usually less crowded.
