Following rumors that the couple were going through some turmoil after Kanye’s recent public antics, it has been announced that popular reality television star Kim Kardashian and rapper Kanye West have officially filed for divorce after being married for 6 years.

The divorce, which is rumored to be worth over US$2.1 billion, was filed at the Los Angeles County Superior Court with well known divorce attorney Laura Wasser representing Kim Kardashian. TMZ reported in January that the couple were nearly done filing the divorce papers, but that Kim was not “in a rush” to do so. However, they also reported that their marriage had reached the stage of being “beyond repair.”

Kanye and Kim splitting

The Kim Kardashian and Kanye West divorce is not a total shocker. In July 2020, West hinted that he was looking to divorce Kim Kardashian after he referenced in a series of tweets Kardashian’s meeting with Meek Mill (among other things) at a criminal justice reform summit in 2018 as well as her trying to lock West up. Kardashian then announced last summer that they were facing complications in the relationship due to the 43-year-old rapper’s bipolar disorder.

“Anyone who has this or has a loved one in their life who does, knows how incredibly complicated and painful it is to understand,” Kardashian stated. “I kindly ask that the media and public give us the compassion and empathy that is needed so that we can get through this.”

TMZ also reported in January that, “Kim was ready to pull the plug on the marriage at one point, but it was when Kanye was going through a serious bipolar episode and she felt it was cruel to do it when he wasn’t well.”

It was during this time when West announced his bid for President of the United States. Although brief, it was a chaotic bid at the White House as he got onto the ballot in 12 states and received more than 66,000 votes. This was the seventh highest number of votes received by any candidate, trailing behind Joe Biden, former President Donald Trump and nominees from the Green and Alliance parties, Libertarian and the Party for Socialism and Liberation.

According to E!’s sources, “it became very clear that they did not have similar lifestyles or viewpoints.” E! reported, “There was no dramatic final moment between them recently where she said, ‘This is it.’ They decided a while ago that they were going to do this and go their separate ways.

It became apparent that there was tension in the relationship when reports surfaced that they had been physically separated for some time, with Kim living at their Calabasas mansion while Kanye West remained reclusive on a Wyoming ranch. The divorce was officially filed before the upcoming premiere of the final season of “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” which is expected to reveal ongoing problems and stress between the power couple.

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian – “Kimye” no more

The move by Kardashian brings an imminent end to one of the most followed celebrity couples of the 21st century. The two figures first began dating in 2012 and already had their first child by 2013. Following the birth of their first daughter, North, West proposed to Kardashian using the giant screen at the empty waterfront ballpark of the San Francisco Giants. The couple was married in Florence, Italy on May 24, 2014. The Kardashian-West wedding was a lavish, high fashion event preceded by weekend festivities in Paris, France.

The marriage was the first for Kanye West and the third for Kim Kardashian. They share four children – 2 daughters (North and Chicago) and 2 sons (Saint and Psalm) between them – all of whom are under 7 years old. It is expected that the couple will get joint custody for their four children.

Both Kardashian and West are reported to be billionaires, each with their own respective fortunes made through independent ventures. Regarding their assets, TMZ reported that the couple do have a prenuptial agreement. So, although nothing is confirmed, it is reported that they are close to finalizing their property settlements. The reactions on Twitter expressed shock at the announcement. However, many followers expected this was coming, especially considering West’s behavior in the public eye being scrutinized these last couple of months.

I’m still in shock about Kim & Kanye. Like, I feel like on one hand it has been coming for a while but on the other hand I never thought this would happen! #KUWTK #Kimye #KimKardashianDivorce 🤯

Although neither celebrity has publicly announced anything regarding their divorce yet, Kim Kardashian seems to be enjoying the new single life. She shared via her Instagram Stories that she was celebrating her longtime friend Jonathan Cheban’s (aka FoodGod) 47th birthday. The post showed a cake commemorating the time her sister, Kourtney Kardahsian, slapped him. The picture on the cake shows Cheban receiving an open palm slap to the face from Kourtney during an argument which aired in 2013 on the reality show “Kourtney & Kim Take Miami.”
