Cultural can’t-miss Spring 2021 events in Atlanta

It’s the season of new life, and traditionally spring is the season of festivals in May – though they won’t look exactly the same this year, there are several can’t-miss Spring 2021 events in Atlanta to make plans for. In the coming weeks, there are opportunities to experience unique art installations, natural wonders, performances and annual festivities. All of the experiences mentioned are taking COVID-19 precautions seriously, ensuring that social distancing takes place and masks are worn at all times. Check out this list to see some of the great cultural Spring 2021 events in Atlanta that you won’t want to miss this year.

Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel Exhibit

If you’ve ever wanted to see the Sistine Chapel, but haven’t been able to make it to the Vatican City, then now is your chance to see reproductions of the paintings that adorn the ceiling of this chapel within the official residence of the Pope. The original paintings by Renaissance master painter Michelangelo date back to the 15th century. You can view them in their original sizes at this exhibition at the Westside Cultural Arts Center by appointment only. Click here for tickets and times.

Shows at Role Call Theater

There are some great opportunities to see theatrical performances outside in the next few weeks at the Amphitheater at Ponce City Market, home of the independent RoleCall Theater. On upcoming weekends through March 13th you can purchase tickets here to attend Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” using Black culture, rhythm and dialogue to re-imagine the classic bard’s tale.

The One by One Exhibition

At the ABV Gallery, a contemporary art gallery with a focus on the New Contemporary Movement in the BeltLine/Inman Park neighborhood, the One by One exhibit is showcasing a variety of 1’x1’ artworks from a curated group of 100 contemporary artists from around the world. Friday Jazz at the High

If you love jazz and art, then there is no better combination than Friday Jazz at the High, hosted by Jamal Ahmad from Jazz 91.9 WCLK, “Atlanta’s jazz station.” At this event, guests can enjoy live music, drinks and art from bebop to swing and more, with a different style featured each month. Tickets in advance are required, especially now due to COVID-19 space limitations. You can purchase tickets for March 19 here.

Daffodil Days

This time of year is notable for the thousands of beautiful yellow daffodils that bloom all across the city, but they are especially present within Oakland Cemetery. If being in nature and exploring a historic place during one of its most beautiful times sounds good to you, then go on a self-guided tour using Oakland Cemetery’s downloadable map to explore the most beautiful displays throughout the grounds. Signage will also share origin stories behind some of these historic bulbs.

Atlanta Science Festival

Each year, the Atlanta Science Festival celebrates local science and technology with attractions for curious people of all ages. This year there will be 80+ virtual, self-guided and outdoor events. Highlights this year include the City Science Quest (which you complete with the aid of your smartphone), the Atlanta 40 (which focuses on 40 organisms native to Atlanta) and the virtual panel on the film “Citizen Nobel” about the pressure of winning the Nobel Prize. Georgia Renaissance Festival

Just outside of Atlanta, Fairburn hosts the celebration of medieval times known as the Georgia Renaissance Festival. These attractions will take you back in time and are fun for the whole family. Advanced tickets are required, and space is limited, as this festival is only open each weekend for a limited time. Festival attractions include an artisan market, period-specific entertainment, games and rides and themed food and drinks. Plus, giant turkey legs fit for a feudal lord – need we say more?

Virtual: Wesleyan Artist Market

With a major pivot to respect health concerns related to the ongoing pandemic, the Wesleyan Artist Market (which typically hosts 80 or more regional, professional artists at the Wesleyan School in Peachtree Corners) will be a virtual event this year. You will still be able to visit all of the artists’ exhibitions and purchase from the virtual exhibit, with a portion of proceeds benefiting the Wesleyan Arts Alliance that supports student programs, facilities and arts education at Wesley School.

Cherokee County Indian Festival and Mother’s Day Powwow

For the 31st year, Cherokee County will see its annual Indian Festival and Mother’s Day Powwow presented by Rolling Thunder and Indio Trail. The festival celebrates all aspects of American Indian culture and was founded by Chipa Lone Eagle Wolfe, a stalwart member of the Georgia Native American community. This event is located at Bolling Park and features a dance competition, food and drinks and activities for kids.

Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience

Historic Pullman Yards in the Kirkwood/Edgewood neighborhood of Atlanta will serve as host to the immersive digital art experience that is the “Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience” exhibit, coming to Atlanta this spring. This exhibit will feature the art of Van Gogh as seen through 360-degree projections, 15,000-feet screens and virtual reality. With features for both kids and adults, this promises to be an incredible journey through the art and the life of the artist for those who admire this groundbreaking painter.
