Just as Westerns seemed a genre of the past, Netflix has released an official teaser for the upcoming Western “The Harder They Fall.”

Set to debut in select theaters and hit the streaming platform sometime this fall, the film follows an outlaw named Nat Love (Jonathan Majors) seeking revenge for the murder of his parents two decades ago when he learns his enemy, Rufus Black (Idris Elba), is being released from prison. Apart from Majors and Elba, the film stars an ensemble cast including Regina King, Lakeith Stanfield, Edi Gathegi, Delroy Lindo, Zazie Beetz, Danielle Deadwyler, Deon Cole, Damon Wayans, Jr. and R.J. Cyler.

An official description describes the “The Harder They Fall” as an “assured, righteously new school Western.” Love’s gang set out to help him exact revenge includes “his former love Stagecoach Mary (Beetz), his right and left hand men – hot-tempered Bill Pickett (Gathegi) and fast drawing Jim Beckwourth (Cyler) – and a surprising adversary-turned-ally.”

“The Harder They Fall” marks the directorial debut of popular British artist Jeymes Samuel, better known by his stage name “The Bullitts.” He co-wrote the film with Israeli-American screenwriter Boaz Yakin. Samuel (known for his occasional collaborations with Shawn Carter aka Jay-Z) produced the film alongside Jay-Z, James Lassiter and Lawrence Bender. Jay-Z also wrote the original music for the film, and the soundtrack has already stirred up high expectations for the film based on online audience reactions.

Although this is the directorial debut for Samuel, this isn’t the first venture for the filmmaker in the Western genre. In 2013, he directed, wrote and produced a Western short titled “They Die By Dawn.” The 51-minute short starred actors Rosario Dawson, Michael K. Williams, Jesse Williams and Giancarlo Esposito. That same year, Samuel also collaborated with Jay-Z to produce “The Great Gatsby” soundtrack.

The action-packed film was first announced in July 2019 when Jonathan Majors was signed to play the lead role. Filming was scheduled to begin in March 2020 in Santa Fe, Mexico.

However, filming was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The constant delays in filming resulted in Oscar-nominated actress Cynthia Erivo exiting the film. Although filming was able to resume in September 2020, production was again put on pause in October after an actor tested positive for the coronavirus.

The release date for “The Harder They Fall” is not set as of yet, and the teaser only says the film is “coming soon.” However, the film is expected to release theatrically and then on Netflix sometime this fall.
