As new films finally begin to release after a long year of the pandemic, we’re stoked about these upcoming movies in theaters for 2021. While the film industry across the globe struggled to maintain a consistent flow of production, studios have been patiently standing by to showcase their long awaited works.

The effects of the pandemic dramatically changed the film and theater industries, but with vaccinations finally allowing a sense of normalcy for theater operators and the cast working behind the scenes, you can now enjoy your favorite films in your local theater with all your favorite movie munchies. Make sure to check your local movie theater’s latest safety guidelines, and be on the lookout for these upcoming movies in theaters this year.

“Don’t Breathe 2”

The first installment of this action horror-slash-thriller received praise for its fresh take on the genre, and the sequel is expected to receive just as much recognition from fans awaiting the next chapter. Three young robbers set out to steal loads of cash stashed away inside of a blind man’s house. After breaking in, they realize the man inside the house isn’t as harmless as they thought he was. The movie follows the robbers as they try to escape the murderous hands of Stephen Lang, who plays the blind veteran.

As critics acclaim the first film directed by Rodo Sayague, fans of the Sony Pictures release are anticipating holding their breath for another film full of twists and turns. “Don’t Breathe 2” takes place eight years after the original, and with Lang having a family of his own to protect this time, the stakes are higher than before.

“Stillwater”

“Stillwater” follows Bill Baker (Matt Damon), an oil-rigger from Oklahoma, on a mission trying to save his daughter, Allison (Abigail Breslin), from a French prison after she’s accused of a murder she never committed. Realizing she has nearly run out of options, Baker moves to France and struggles to navigate an unfamiliar legal system and language barriers while attempting to prove her innocence. With so many different obstacles in the way, we’re left to wonder if the mission is as feasible as he thinks. Directed by Academy Award winner Tom McCarthy, the film is highly anticipated and generating buzz among viewers and critics alike.

“Eternals”

Based on the Marvel Comics comes an American superhero film starring a brand-new team of heroes ready to do whatever it takes to stop an immortal alien race from taking over the world. Introducing a wave of new Marvel characters, the film stars a fresh team of superheroes including: Thena (Angelina Jolie), Sersi (Gemma Chan), Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani), Ikaris (Richard Madden), Makkari (Lauren Ridloff) and more.

When it comes to upcoming movies in theaters we’re excited for, this one is at the top of the list. With the film already a couple of years in the making, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige finally announced the debut date release in the United States on Nov. 5, 2021. Fans are excited to be introduced to one of the most diverse casts in the history of Marvel films. With “Eternals” shadowing the tragedy following “Avengers: Endgame,” producers are already gearing up for future films in the ongoing saga.

“Ghostbusters: Afterlife”

After being delayed three times in 2020 due to the effects of the pandemic, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” is said to be one of the most anticipated movies of 2021. With the history of the original “Ghostbusters” dating back to the 80s, the new “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” is set 30 years after the second film in the franchise.

The story follows Callie (Carrie Coon) and her two children, Phoebe and Trevor, as they are forced to move to a farmhouse left to them by Callie’s father, Dr. Egon Spengler, in Summerville, Oklahoma. As the kids start to discover more about their grandfather’s history with the supernatural, the plot begins to thicken. Carrie and her family soon uncover the secrets to their past and familiarize themselves with the Ghostbusters equipment so they can continue the supernatural ghost-chasing tradition passed down through generations.

“Jurassic World: Dominion”

With five films already in the “Jurassic Park” franchise, “Jurassic World: Dominion” will be the sixth installment. Colin Trevorrow is the mastermind behind this science fiction adventure, and Steven Spielberg acts as executive producer, so the renowned dinosaur film is already highly anticipated by fans of the “Jurassic World” trilogy.

The film brings back cast members from previous films like Chris Pratt, Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern and Sam Neill, helping to tie all the films together harmoniously. Originally the third film was said to release in June of this year, but with cinemas closing and film producers held back due to COVID-19, the new release date is finalized for June of 2022. If you’re into high quality computer graphic imagery, unbelievable cinematography and real-looking dinosaurs, “Jurassic World: Dominion” definitely checks all the boxes.
