When it comes to the Oscars, it’s usually the same old formula – fancy movie actors get big awards. They give a speech, everyone claps, end of the show. But not this year.

Chris Rock joked about Jada Pinkett Smith being in the next “GI Jane,” alluding to her hair. Pinkett Smith has openly discussed having alopecia, which is a condition that causes hair loss. Within a few seconds, Jada’s husband, Will Smith, came on stage and audibly slapped Rock across the face.

Even though Smith apologized to the Academy and the other nominees after winning an award for his performance in “King Richard,” the Oscars released a statement condemning the act and are now launching an investigation.

Key comments:

“Will Smith just slapped the shit out of me,” said Chris Rock moments after the incident at the Oscars.

“Denzel [Washington] said to me a few minutes ago, he said, ‘At your highest moment, be careful. That’s when the devil comes for you,’” said Smith during his acceptance speech. “I look like the crazy father, just like they said. I look like the crazy father just like they said about Richard Williams. But love will make you do crazy things. I’m hoping the Academy invites me back. Thank you."

“The Academy condemns the actions of Mr Smith at last night’s show,” wrote the Academy in their formal statement. “We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law."
