After Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam announced that she wouldn’t be returning to the office for another term, there has been a lot of curiosity surrounding who will be throwing their hat into the ring. One person that many have suspected would succeed Lam is former police officer, security minister and current Chief Secretary John Lee. And on Wednesday, he announced that he would run for the position.
Lam and Lee are both currently sanctioned by the US for their role in the creation of the national security law. His run has also reportedly gotten Beijing’s approval, something that apparently no other candidate is expected to get.
Key comments:
“Having been in the government for over 40 years, to serve the people of Hong Kong is a glory,” said Lee.
