The Rescued Feast turns food waste into gourmet fare

Spearheaded by CHOMP, an award-winning food-saving app, in collaboration with media outlet TMS and charity More Good.

Hong Kong's battle against food waste takes a gourmet turn this month with the city's first-ever sustainable dining event, The Rescued Feast, slated for April 25. Spearheaded by CHOMP, an award-winning food-saving app, in collaboration with media company TMS and charity More Good, the event aims to showcase the potential of food surplus by transforming it into an upscale dining experience. This innovative approach addresses the alarming fact that Hong Kong discards 3,600 tonnes of food daily, contributing to 40% of its landfill content, with only 4% being recycled.

Carla Martinesi, CEO of CHOMP, emphasizes the urgent need to change perceptions around food waste, stating, “Most food waste that ends up in landfill is perfectly edible, so our mission is to change people’s outlook on food and show them that there is often a second life for food.”

The event will feature culinary creations from food surplus, prepared under the guidance of Mike Silva, head chef at More Good and former talent in the Michelin Star-rated Yardbird kitchen. “We are delighted to be part of such an exciting event to share with people just how far food scraps can go to make a delicious and nutritious meal. Collaborating with CHOMP and TMS means we have the opportunity to raise awareness on the ongoing problems with food waste across Hong Kong.”

The Rescued Feast is not just a dining event but a statement on the importance of sustainability and community action in combating food waste. Krystal Lai, founder of TMS, highlights the goal of bringing awareness to the extent of food waste in homes and restaurants across Hong Kong. "Collaborating with CHOMP and TMS means we have the opportunity to raise awareness on the ongoing problems with food waste across Hong Kong.”

Attendees can also look forward to a raffle with prizes ranging from sustainable fashion vouchers to a luxurious stay at Hyatt Centric Victoria Harbour.
