Throughout the pandemic, we’ve all been looking for ways to keep ourselves entertained one way or another. But once you’ve done it all and once more again, things can get a little boring. It’s time for finding new ways to stay entertained and keep our minds active. If you’re looking for cheap, fun hobbies to try out, we have some ideas that won’t have you bored and staring at a wall throughout the pandemic.

Embroidery

For those with a lot of patience who want to explore their artistic abilities, embroidering is a great way to discover a talent you might not know you have. With simply a needle, thread and an embroidery hoop (which can be purchased online for less than US$10 (HK$78) for a set with different sizes), you can come up with all different designs to add character to your clothing or accessories. Or, you can embroider wall hangings and other decorations for your home – or even as gifts. This is a great activity to start with the upcoming holiday season for a gift idea that is unique and thoughtful.

Sewing and knitting

Similar to embroidery, sewing and knitting take a lot of patience – but once you’ve got it down, it can be gratifying and useful. How awesome would it be to create your own clothing? You won’t have to be scanning for hours on online stores because you can just make custom pieces in your own home. Another way to use your newly acquired sewing skills is to transform thrifted fashion. Not only will you be saving money, but your clothes will be tailored to your size and style perfectly.

Gardening

If you’re lucky enough to have the space for a garden, now is your chance to unlock its potential. But even without that open space, you’re still capable of growing your own herbs and veggies. Growing your own food is not only a fascinating project that will teach you a lot about plants and gardening, but it’s also great for the environment. Plus, veggies from your own home garden are sure to be the freshest, tastiest options for your meals. You may even want to brush up on your cooking skills as well. If you’re looking for something more aesthetic, you can opt for a beautiful selection of flowers and plants to brighten up your space.

Chess

If you haven’t already been motivated to learn more about chess after binge watching “The Queen’s Gambit” on Netflix, you should consider checking out this classic game. Chess is both engaging and stimulating for the brain (which is especially nice during long periods of quarantine). It’s easily one of the best cheap, fun hobbies. Even if you don’t have someone to play against, there are plenty of apps available to teach you the game. Then, you can try your hand against the computer or with other players online.

Writing

Let loose the creative, lyrical soul buried inside of you. Pouring out your heart onto paper through poetry or prose can feel liberating and inspiring. In times like these, journaling can also be a healthy way to process your emotions and day-to-day experiences while simultaneously keeping track of things that are happening in your life. Search online for a gorgeous leather-bound journal, or some cute scrapbooking materials to get inspired and creative with your thoughts.

Mixology

Bring the bar to your own home by learning about the fundamentals of different liquors and experimenting with your own cocktails. Although becoming a mixologist takes a lot of training, there’s no harm in trying out your own mixes at home (in moderation, of course). Especially during the pandemic, staying in for your own concoctions is much safer than going out. Plus, when restrictions lighten up, you can impress all your friends with your new bartending skills.

Camping

Unlike the other hobbies on this list, you’ll be required to leave your house for this one. But camping in the great outdoors is worth it and gets you exploring nature. Being stuck in your house all day, every day won’t do you any favors, so camping presents a great opportunity to refresh your mind. So, grab everything you need for s’mores and head out into nature for a new outlook on things.

Film studies

With the vast amount of films now available on streaming platforms, you’ll never run out of things to watch. From canon classics such as “Casablanca” and “The Godfather” to experimental cinema and indie films, you’ll find yourself glued to your couch if you take up this hobby. Plus, becoming a bit of a film buff is always a great conversation starter for when you start venturing out of the house again.

Yoga

Yoga takes the cake when it comes to cheap, fun hobbies – and it’s taken the world by storm as more and more people are hopping on this train to enlightenment. It’s not too late for you to join in, and yoga has plenty of beneficial effects on your mind and body. There is a misconception that you have to join a class in order to learn – but all you need is a beginner YouTube video and some open space to get started.

Calligraphy

Who doesn’t want beautiful handwriting? Learning the art of calligraphy can be rewarding in many ways, from improving your own penmanship to providing you with a calm, quiet activity that promotes relaxation. Give your lovely handwritten cards out this Christmas to show off your newly learned skill. This is one of the cheap, fun hobbies that will come in handy during the holidays.

Collecting

Shells, books, posters, plates – the list of possibilities is endless. People can collect just about anything. The beauty of collecting is that it’s completely up to you – are you into something unique, or even odd? Creating a collection around it can be a way to show off your love and provides a conversation starter. Just keep things organized to avoid falling into building up clutter – there’s a difference between collecting and hoarding.

Puzzles

You’d be surprised at how fast time flies when you’re busy solving puzzles. Finishing an entire piece offers great satisfaction and will keep you coming back for more. With so many images and designs to choose from, puzzles will keep you amused while keeping your brain and imagination fit and active.
