Whether you're an experienced trekker seeking a new challenge or simply looking to challenge yourself, get ready to gear up and explore the six best hikes in Hong Kong this summer.

Razor Hill

For those seeking an outdoor adventure without committing an entire day, Razor Hill is the perfect choice. It may be best to begin your journey in Pik Uk, a small village in the Sai Kung district, because it’s a shorter hike while still providing great views. As you ascend towards Razor Hill, the trail transforms from a leisurely walk to a moderately challenging climb. When you get closer to the ridge, prepare for a steeper trail. But fear not – there are installed ropes along the last 50 meters to give you a hand in finishing the climb. Once you reach the top, your efforts are rewarded with views of Sai Kung, Clearwater Bay, Po Lam and Tseung Kwan O.

Little Hawaii Falls

Located in the heart of the New Territories, you can find this gem via Razor Hill. It runs between Tseng Lan Shue and Tseung Kwan O Village, making it an easily accessible waterfall hike popular among locals and families. So, plan your visit early in the day to beat the crowds. For that perfect Instagram-worthy shot, head towards the bridge overlooking the stream. From there, navigate towards the cliff adorned with rocks. This spot offers a great vantage point for photos with the waterfall and Po Lam in the background And, of course, with the hot summer air, don’t forget to take a dip in the waters before you move on with your hike.

South Lantau Country Trail

South Lantau Country Trail is another popular hiking option for the summer, offering a relatively easy hike with gentle uphills and a sharp downhill towards the end. What makes this a favorite for the summer is its forested paths, providing ample shade from the sun, and its path to Cheung Sha Beach. Opt for early mornings or late afternoons to enjoy quieter moments and stunning sunrise or sunset views. Don’t forget to bring beach essentials like swimwear, towels and sunscreen if you plan to relax at the beach after your hike.

Ng Tung Chai Waterfalls

Ng Tung Chai Waterfalls offers a beautiful and refreshing hiking experience with four stunning waterfalls to explore: Bottom Fall, Middle Fall, Main Fall and Scatter Fall. The cool, crystal-clear pools beneath each waterfall invite hikers to take a dip and rejuvenate after the climb. Starting from Ng Tung Chai village, the 5.5-kilometer trail provides a mix of gentle inclines and more challenging terrain, perfect for a summer adventure. Remember, there are no official stops to refill water bottles along the route, so carry enough water for the entire hike. Make sure also to wear sturdy hiking shoes, and start early to make the most of your hike.

Rhino Rock Hike

Located in Stanley, the Rhino Rock trail offers a short yet exhilarating adventure that captures the imagination. While it may not be as popular as Lion Rock, it presents a fun challenge for summer hikers. The highlight is, of course, Rhino Rock itself – a large rock formation that resembles a rhinoceros. If you’re ready for an extra challenge, you can attempt to scale the rock and perch atop its “horn,” but extra caution is advised due to the risks involved. Consider visiting during early morning or late afternoon to enjoy cooler temperatures and potentially fewer crowds. After your hike, take time to explore Stanley Market or relax at one of the seaside cafes.

Mount High West

Mount High West offers a hiking experience that rivals the popular Victoria Peak, providing stunning views and a convenient location accessible via public transportation. Although the hike might be challenging, you’ll find 360-degree views of Hong Kong’s skyline once you reach the top. From there, journey through Lung Fu Shan Country Park, where dense forests create a contrast to the urban bustle just below. Throughout the hike, you can catch your breath at rest areas and pavilions equipped with benches. One noteworthy consideration — as you approach the peak along a ridge, particularly windy days can add a challenging twist to your adventure, so be extra mindful.
