Pearl Lam Galleries will host "Maggi Hambling: The Night," the celebrated British artist's first solo exhibition in Asia since 2019, from March 26 to May 16. Coinciding with Art Basel Hong Kong, the show will introduce new works alongside a feature in Pearl Lam's stand at the fair.
Hambling, known for her rebellious approach and contributions to British art, explores themes of seduction, intimacy and the vastness of the night sky in her latest series. The exhibition includes previously unseen pieces like "Sexy, Sexy Dream" and "About to Kiss," accompanied with “Night Sky” and “Night Clouds.” Hambling's fascination with nighttime, a subject she first explored at 14 years old, is evident in these pieces, which reflect a world of silence, reflection and the coexistence of dreams and reality.

“I’m excited to return to Hong Kong and to be working with Pearl Lam. The subject of my exhibition, the Night, is one I have returned to throughout my career. Night inhabits a mysterious territory where beauty, fear, desire and dream combine and invite us in,” says Hambling.
Influenced by the likes of Rainer Maria Rilke and Chinese calligraphy, Hambling's work blurs the lines between darkness and light, presence and absence. Noteworthy pieces include a new triptych, "Edge XXX," and an addition to the "Wall of Water" series, which examines the dual nature of water. Maggi Hambling shares her enthusiasm for the exhibition, emphasizing the night's role as a source of inspiration throughout her career.
